New President Named for Eisenhower Fellowships

John S. Wolf, a senior State Department official serving as assistant secretary of state for nonproliferation, will assume the presidency of Eisenhower Fellowships on August 16. Wolf’s overseas postings have included Malaysia, where he was U.S. ambassador, as well as Pakistan, Vietnam, Greece and Australia. He also served as President Clinton’s special adviser for Caspian Basin energy diplomacy.

“As I end 34 years of diplomatic service, I have been reflecting on the changes that shape the conduct of diplomacy and the world around us,” said Wolf as he prepares to join Eisenhower Fellowships. Read more

Gala Event Marks Completion of 2004 Multi Nation Program

With the traditional annual meeting day gala dinner, Eisenhower Fellowships marked end of the 2004 Multi Nation Program. Jose Ugaz of Peru, Sirikit Sayah of Indonesia, and Mark Vanheukelen of the European Commission spoke about their experiences on behalf of their group to the more than one hundred trustees, advisory council members, Fellows and friends who attended. Alan Greenspan Receives Eisenhower Award

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan was honored with the Eisenhower Medal for Leadership and Service on May 20th. The medal is awarded by Eisenhower Fellowships to public figures who have achieved widely recognized advances toward President Eisenhower’s vision of peace and productivity. Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve since 1987, is the seventeenth person to receive the Eisenhower Medal, which has been awarded to ambassadors, publishers, economists, and three former presidents.

Rector of Universidad del Pacifico

Felipe Ortiz de Zevallos ’96,founder and chairman of the Instituto APOYO and Grupo APOYO, was elected rector of the Universidad del Pacifico in Lima, Peru. In an Eisenhower link, Estuardo Marro, a 1988 Fellow from Peru, is a former rector of the university and now serves as vice rector.

Australian Honors

Sir Leo Hielscher ’73 was made a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC) in the Queen's Birthday Honors List on June 14. Sir Leo, chairman of the Queensland Treasury Corporation, was awarded this honor in recognition of his service to economic growth and development, to business and finance and to the community through strong support for major arts, cultural, sporting and charitable organizations. Chairman for Entie Bank

Paul Chiu ’88, a former finance minister for Taiwan has assumed the chairmanship of Entie Commercial Bank in Taipei.

Ballestero named Spain’s ambassador to OECD

Fernando Ballestero ’98 has been appointed ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris. Ballestero previously served as general manager of the Fundacion Retevisión in Madrid. This is the second OECD appointment in a month for an Eisenhower alumnus, as Ballestero will join Carlos Elizondo ’03, who assumed his OECD duties for Mexico in mid-May.

Honors for Philadelphia Fellow

Philadelphia Fellow Donna Frisby-Greenwood ’04 was honored recently with two awards in May: the Cecil B. Moore award, given by the Philadelphia Barristers, and the YWCA of Philadelphia’s ‘Woman to Watch’ award. Frisby Greenwood’s fellowship took her to Turkey where she focused on primary education for young and disadvantaged children. She is executive director of the After School All Stars program in Philadelphia.

Elected to Philippine House of Representatives

On behalf of the party AKBayan, Risa Hontiveros Baraquel ’01 has been elected to the House of Representatives for a three-year term. Hontiveros Baraquel, the managing partner for TLP Productions, served as a member of the government panel for peace talks with the National Democratic Front.

Mississippi State Senator

Senator Hillman Frazier ’98, began a new term in the Mississippi State Senate in January. He has served in that body since 1993, after 13 years in the state House of Representatives. Senator Frazier, who has hosted numerous Eisenhower Fellows during their program travels in the U.S., chairs the Interstate and Federal Cooperation Committee, and is vice chair of the Municipalities Committee.
