2004 South Asia Single Region Program Launched

Nineteen Eisenhower Fellows from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka embarked on their fellowship program in Philadelphia with seminar discussions, individual professional meetings, and site visits to NGOs led by Eisenhower alumni Fellows. Accomplished leaders in business, public health, law, journalism, and civil rights, the Fellows experienced first hand the intensity of the current U.S. election campaign at political rallies and on the city streets, where the campaign worker traffic has been heavy. Before they departed from Philadelphia, the Fellows were able to discuss foreign policy with former Ambassador to India Frank Wisner at a special seminar held for them and invited guests. Subsequently, the group scattered in all directions around the country to confer and exchange ideas with eminent doers and thinkers in their respective fields.

Two Fellows Elected in Indonesia

Agung Laksono ’90, Indonesia’s former minister of youth and sports, is now deputy chairman of the political party Golkar and was recently elected House Speaker. Laksano served as a representative in Parliament prior to his ministry post.

In addition, Laode Ida ’02, director of the Center for Regional Development Studies, has been elected to the Senate.

Philadelphia Eisenhower Fellow Alumni Form Association

The Philadelphia Area Eisenhower Fellows inaugurated their alumni association with a reception and ceremony honoring former president Adrian Basora and welcoming John Wolf as the new president. The Philadelphia Fellows were joined by new USA Fellows from Philadelphia and the Research Triangle Area as well as the Fellows of the 2004 South Asia Single Region Program for the celebration. Diane Melley ’01, one of the officers of the new association, coordinated the event held at the headquarters of Jane Golden’s ’03, Mural Arts Program. Also participating were Philadelphia Nominating Committee members Anne d'Harnoncourt, director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Jane Pepper, president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and Eisenhower Fellowships Trustee Constantine Papadakis, president of Drexel University.

Chairman of Financial Holding Company in Taipei

Mu-Tsai Chen ’97, China (Taiwan), has assumed the chairmanship of China Development Financial Holding Corporation. Chen is a former vice minister of the Finance Ministry and, prior to his current post, he served as chair of the Banker’s Association.

Castro Assigned to Terrorism Unit

Philadelphia Police Captain Dan Castro ’01, USA, was one of two captains hand-picked by the police commissioner to serve in the Counter Terrorism Bureau. Castro’s responsibilities at the Bureau include responding to major incidents in Philadelphia and its surrounding counties, training officers, and coordinating responses with the city’s Fire Department and schools. “I am really excited by the challenges of this assignment,“ says Castro, who is also charged with revising the entire city’s emergency plans. “The contacts I made at Scotland Yard during my fellowship have been a tremendous asset in providing me with their counter-terrorism plans.”

Fellow Joins Board of East West Center

John E. Osborn ’98, USA, senior vice president of Cephalon, Inc. and research fellow at Princeton University’s Bobst Center for Peace and Justice, was appointed to a three-year term on the Board of Governors of the East-West Center by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. The East-West Center, based in Honolulu, Hawaii, is an internationally recognized education and research organization established in 1960 by the U.S. Congress “to strengthen relations and understanding among the nations of Asia, the Pacific and the United States.”

New College and Career Director for the Philadelphia School District

Donna Frisby Greenwood ’03 has been appointed the new director of the Office of College and Career Awareness for the School District of Philadelphia. This office serves the nearly 50,000 young Philadelphians who are enrolled in the city’s high schools by providing them information regarding college preparation and application, financial aid, scholarships, and career exploration. Frisby-Greenwood comes to the position from the After-School All-Stars Philadelphia program, which she founded in 1999 and headed for more than four years.
