Documentary Film AwardBrazilian journalist Simone Duarte 96, who directed En Route to Baghdad, a documentary about Sergio Vieira de Mello, the late UN High Commissioner for Human Rights killed in Iraq, won the UN Correspondents Association silver medal award for reporting humanitarian and developmental affairs. The documentary was described as an affectionate tribute to Sergio Vieira de Mello that reveals a great deal about the work of the UN, their successes and failures, their aspirations and the obstacles they face from within and without the organization. Duarte is the former chief of TV Globos New York office. |

EF President Meets with Alumni in Northeast AsiaEarly in December President John Wolf traveled with Trustee Kimball Chen and Program Officer Erin Hillman to Beijing, Taipei, and Tokyo. This was John's first chance to meet with Eisenhower Fellows and trustees in northeast Asia. Fellows from Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, as well as USA fellows and one Australian met in Beijing for a one day conference focused on the economy and evolving Asian economic centers. He participated in the annual meeting of the alumni in Taipei and met with the alumni and nominating committee in Tokyo. Enthusiastic discussion at all three stops looked back at Fellows' experience, and ahead at ways to generate more activity among alumni Fellows. "I am delighted by the level of energy I encountered in our alumni and trustees on this trip," said Wolf. "There are a number of creative ideas for the future ideas on which we will hope to act in the new year. |

Trade Minister named in IndonesiaMari Pangestu 90 was named minister of trade in the cabinet of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. A highly influential public commentator on economic policy, Pengestu has served as advisor to numerous international economic organizations and commissions and is a board member of the Centre for Strategic & International Studies in Jakarta. |

Jobs and the EnvironmentPaula DiPerna 98, USA, has founded the Jobs and Environment Initiative, a research, public policy, and public education program on the job benefits of environmental policies. In addition to its state-specific studies, the Initiative has conducted the first detailed nationwide studies of job creation by the environmental industry. The mission of the Initiative is to examine the presumption that environmental regulation and protection costs jobs, and to examine the synergy between environmental protection, employment, and economic health. Wei Heads New Insurance BureauMark Wei, the 04 Fellow from China (Taiwan), has been appointed director general of the new National Insurance Bureau, which he helped structure. The new organization will be under the supervision of Financial Supervisory Commission. During his fellowship Wei focused on trends in the U.S. insurance industry and on issues of governance, transparency, public/private cooperation, and organizational restructuring.
