Minister of Justice Named

Monica Macovei ’97, Romania, was appointed Minister of Justice in the Government of Romania in December 2004. Macovei was formerly head of the Romanian Association for the Defense of Human Rights.

Conference on AIDS a Success

The Bhandary Foundation, headed by Manjunath Bhandari ’04, India, sponsored State level HIV/AIDS & Drug abuse Awareness Conference in Mangalore on February 20, 2005. The successful event attracted nearly 1500 nursing students, nursing faculty, and healthcare related students from colleges and institutes all over Karnataka. The Governor of Maharashtra inaugurated the conference, and speakers included representatives from UNESCO, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Indian parliament.

Mexico City Names New President of Board of Charitable Trusts

Maria Elena Juarez de Beristain, spouse of Javier Beristain ’87, Mexico, was designated by the Mayor of Mexico City as President of the Board of Charitable Trusts of Mexico City, in charge of supervising the activities of close to 500 non-profit, non-governmental organizations, which provide private assistance to persons with different abilities or special needs. In the 105 years of history of the Board, she is the first woman to lead it.

President of UNC addresses Fellows and Committee Members

An address by Molly Broad, President of the University of North Carolina and EF steering committee member, was the highlight of a February 18 meeting of Fellows and committee members from Research Triangle, North Carolina. Broad’s talk emphasized the importance of programs like the Research Triangle International Leadership Initiative in introducing Americans to global perspectives, and encouraged Fellows to share their international experiences with others in the region. Also during the meeting, Rosalind Fuse-Hall ’04, USA, and Jean Davis ’04, USA, both recently returned from their Fellowships, offered insights gained during their programs.

The gathering marked the official launch of the 2005 candidate selection process for the Triangle region. Applications for the RTNC Fellowships are being accepted through April 18. Click here to apply.

Fellows’ Joint Simulcast on E-Business

Cecile Moulard ’02, France, will be guest lecturer to the students of Macedonio Alanis ’02, Mexico, via a videoconference on Monday, April 4. The conference will be simulcast on the internet, making it available all interested parties. Last year Alanis and Moulard conducted a similar program in which Fellows from other countries participated and sent comments during the session.

Alanis recently designed a course on e-government which the World Bank and the Office of the President of Mexico are sponsoring. It will reach 1200 specialists in 9 Latin American countries.


A Fellow’s Memoirs

Denis Tuohy ’67, United Kingdom, has recently published his memoirs, Wide Eyed in Medialand: A Broadcaster’s Journey. Tuohy was the first Catholic newscaster to join BBC Northern Ireland, and reported for BBC 2 in London through the 1960s and 70s. He traveled widely to cover world politics through to the 1990s, and in the course of his career interviewed many of the world’s leading figures in politics and culture, including Margaret Thatcher, Michael Mac Liammoir, Duke Ellington, Salvador Allende, Richard Burton, the Shah of Iran, Muhammed Ali, Seamus Heaney and Mary Robinson.

The book also carries an account of Tuohy’s travels through the U.S. while on his Eisenhower Fellowship in 1967.
