Annual Meeting marks end of 2005 Multi Nation Program

Twenty-five Multi Nation Fellows and 6 USA Fellows completed their program experiences at the traditional annual meeting day gala dinner on May 19. Yusuf Abubakar of Nigeria, Tantowi Yahya of Indonesia, Micaela McGinley of Northern Ireland, and Kathy Higgins of the United States each addressed the trustees, sponsors, guests, and friends in attendance and offered insights gathered during their Fellowship travels. Prior to the evening’s program, Fellows participated in a seminar on foreign policy with Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Henry A. Kissinger.

Whitehead awarded Eisenhower Medal for Leadership and Service

John C. Whitehead was honored with the Eisenhower Medal for Leadership and Service on May 19. The medal is awarded by Eisenhower Fellowships to public figures who have achieved widely recognized advances toward President Eisenhower’s vision of peace and productivity. A businessman, former deputy secretary of state, and a dedicated philanthropist, Whitehead is the eighteenth person to receive the Eisenhower Medal, which has been awarded to ambassadors, publishers, economists, and three former presidents.

President of Episcopal Relief and Development appointed

Rob Radtke ’98, USA, was appointed president of Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) in April and officially takes his post in July. The ERD is the worldwide relief agency of the Episcopal Church and provides money and resources in times of emergency or disaster. Prior to heading the ERD, Radtke was the Senior Vice President for Programs at the Asia Society.

New Chairman and CEO for China Unicom Limited

Chang Xiaobing ’99, China, was appointed executive director, chairman, and chief executive officer of the China Unicom Limited in December. Prior to joining Unicom Group, Mr. Chang served as a Director General of the Department of Telecommunications Administration of the Ministry of Information Industry and executive director of China Telecom Corporation Limited. Chang was appointed the Chairman of Unicom Group in November 2004 and the Chairman of the company’s subsidiaries, China Unicom Corporation Limited and Unicom New World Telecommunications Co. Ltd. the following month.

Soong meets with President of China

James Soong ’82, China (Taiwan), Chairman, People’s First Party (PFP) and former Secretary General, Kuomintang (KMT) was received in Beijing by Hu Jintao, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China at the Great Hall of the People. At the meeting, Soong advocated the PFP’s position on the one-China principle and the two discussed new negotiations with Taiwan’s government.

Ambassador addresses NCTA

Jordanian Ambassador Karim Kawar ’00, Jordan, addressed 500 business leaders at a meeting of the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA), where Joan Myers ’05, USA, is President and CEO. In his talk, Kawar characterized Jordan as a productive competitor in information technology as well as a “gateway” for countries seeking to do business in the Middle East.

Elected to the Board of Directors of the American Farm Bureau Federation

Alex Dowse ’97, USA, was elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the American Farm Bureau Federation at the organizational meeting of delegates held in January in Charlotte, North Carolina. The American Farm Bureau Federation, which represents over 5 million members, is the largest general farm organization in the world. Dowse is the sixth generation to own and operate his family's 130-acre family farm, Dowse Orchards.

Intel hosts Innovation Day for 2005 MNP Fellows

On April 20, seven Fellows along with EF President John Wolf visited Intel in Folsom, California, for a day-long symposium. The program was specifically designed to introduce the Fellows to technological innovations in health care, government and education. Intel executives and Fellows from Northern Ireland, Israel, Jordan, Nigeria, the Philippines and Singapore shared perspectives on implications for the future. Esther Baldwin ’97, USA Fellow and Intel Innovation Manager, organized the day.
