USA CIP Fellows Begin Travels

Eight individuals were chosen from Philadelphia, Boston, and Research Triangle, NC, as the 2006-07 USA Common Interest Program Fellows for Eisenhower Fellowships.

The Common Interest Program, being piloted as a new approach for Eisenhower Fellowships, includes 30+ emerging leaders from a dozen countries, all of whom are engaged in the program theme of urban challenges. The program provides up to two months of travel overseas, with a custom-designed itinerary for each participant. The USA Fellows travel was launched in November 2006 by Don Hobart, who traveled to Asia with his wife, Kay. Other U.S. Fellows will travel overseas throughout 2007 and connect with their international counterparts at conferences in Dublin, Ireland, Philadelphia, and New York.

The participating USA Fellows are:

From Philadelphia:
Loree Jones, secretary of external affairs for the Mayor’s Office in the City of Philadelphia, is traveling in South Africa to study social services in February-March 2007.

Rick Sauer, executive director of the Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations, traveled to Australia and New Zealand to study affordable housing in January 2007.

Maitreyi Roy, director of Philadelphia Green, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, will look at urban landscape/design in the EU, Spain, and Germany in May 2007.

From Research Triangle, NC:
Don Hobart, director of governmental and legal affairs in the North Carolina Department of Commerce, traveled to Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia to study economic development in November-December 2006. He blogged about his fellowship experience here.

Jennifer Owen, director of policy initiatives at the Duke University Center for Child & Family Policy, will examine poverty alleviation in South Africa in July and August 2007.

Dan Douglas, director of the Raleigh Urban Design Center, will travel in April 2007 to Spain and Germany to study urban design. Read more about Douglas here.

From New England:
Andrea Cabral, sheriff of Suffolk County in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will travel to Australia to explore criminal justice issues in August.

Timothy Cahill, state treasurer and receiver general of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will study economic development in Ireland and India when he travels in April and June. You can read more about Cabral and Cahill here and here.

USA Fellows will meet their international counterparts from a dozen countries while they are in the United States from September to November of 2007 to exchange best practices and fellowship findings on the shared topic of urbanization.

The CIP international Fellow counterparts will arrive in the United States in September to explore their fellowship subtopics over a two-month period and exchange best practices and fellowship findings on the shared topic of urbanization.

Dublin Conference Set for June

“21st Century Cities” is the theme for a conference being organized by the Eisenhower Fellows of Ireland, June 8–10, 2007 in Dublin.

This will be the first in a series of conferences and Fellow gatherings on issues related to urban challenges. Development of technology and its potential impact on the design of cities will be featured throughout the conference. Industry and university campuses in Dublin and visits to other sites will provide the venues, and sightseeing and recreational tours will be offered as well.

The conference precedes EF’s first Common Interest Program, with Fellows from a dozen countries plus the U.S. participating in a fall 2007 program on Challenges of Urbanization. Please click here for more information and registration details.

Philadelphia-Area Fellows Meet With Prince Charles

On January 27, 2007, the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia, headed by Jane Golden, ’03, USA, received a visit from Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall.

Their Royal Highnesses chose to visit the Mural Arts Program during their Philadelphia trip based on their interests in urban regeneration and neighborhood transformation, issues which are integral to the Mural Arts Program’s mission. Golden accompanied the royal couple as they viewed several murals throughout the Philadelphia area and met with children who were painting.

Sister Mary Scullion, ’02, USA, cofounder of Project HOME, also met with Their Royal Highnesses during a train ride from Philadelphia to New York, during which a select group of Philadelphians discussed affordable housing and other city issues with Prince Charles.

Two Fellows Appointed Economic Advisors, Municipal Government of Jieyang

Esther Baldwin, ’97, USA, and Yunyi Luo, PhD, ’97, China, were both appointed economic advisors to the Municipal Government of Jieyang for a term of five years. The appointments came at the Asia Capital Forum conference in Jieyang Gungdong Province in China.

Baldwin is innovation manager at Intel Corporation in Shanghai, and Luo is director of the Institute of Investment, Chinese State Development and Reform Commission.

Vice President, Organizational Transformation, First Uranium Corporation

Sembie Danana, ’94, South Africa, has been appointed vice president, organizational transformation, at the First Uranium Corporation, which listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange in Toronto in December 2006. Previously, Danana was executive director, new business development, for FoodCorp Ltd.

Recipient, Environmental Ambassador Award

The German Foreign Society recently awarded Dr. Mikulas Huba, ’97, Slovakia, with the Environmental Ambassador Award. The award honors outstanding individuals who not only support the spirit of humanity and tolerance, but also environmental protection. Dr. Huba is a professor of geography and geo-ecology at the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Fellows Reunite for Chinese New Year

Huang Wensheng, Dong Zhihua, and Col. Lin Dong (pictured at right), reunited in Beijing after participating in the Northeast Asia program in the U.S. in the fall of 2006. They gathered with staff of the China Education Association for International Exchange and other EF alumni Fellows to discuss follow-up to their programs and to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Vice President, World Board of the International Ombudsman Institute

Tom Frawley, ’89, Northern Ireland, has been elected vice president of the World Board of the International Ombudsman Institute, the worldwide body of Ombudsman offices. His election comes two years after he was elected by European members of the Institute to serve as one of four directors for its European Region.

Frawley was also recently appointed by the University of Ulster as visiting professor on leadership at the faculty of business and management.

Paperback Edition Released, Making the Irish American

John Joseph Lee, ’89, Ireland, co-edited a book called Making the Irish American, which will be available in paperback edition in March 2007. The book was originally published in hardcover in March 2006 by New York University Press. Lee is a professor at New York University.

Dean, Peruvian National Association of Professional Engineers

Hector Gallegos, ’71, Peru, was elected dean of the Peruvian National Association of Professional Engineers for 2006-07. He is president of Gallegos, Casabonne, Arango, Quesada, Ingenieros Civiles S.A.C.

Gallegos has also published several books recently, including Albanileria Estructural, 3era. Edicion; La Ingenieria, 2da. Edicion; Fallas; El Viejo Peru; and El Siglo XIX.
