Vice President of Brazil to Open Ouro Preto Conference

Enthusiasm is growing for EF’s Latin America regional conference, “Leadership for Development and Sustainable Growth: Facing the Challenges in Latin America,” scheduled to be held June 5-8 in Ouro Preto, Brazil

Confirmed conference speakers include Jose Alencar, vice president of Brazil; Aécio Neves, governor of Minas Gerais; Jose Gomes Temporao, Brazilian minister of health; and Eisenhower Fellows Conrado Etchebarne, ’62, Argentina; Benito Baranda, ’91, Chile; Enrique Penalosa, ’01, Colombia; RosaMaria Palacios, ’01, Peru; Elena Verdugo, ’01, Mexico; Martin Burt, ’94, Paraguay; and Daniel Pagliano, ’00, Uruguay, among others.

The conference will kick off Eisenhower Fellowships' 2008 Latin America Regional Program, which will bring 23 emerging leaders from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay to the United States in September 2008. This event will also provide a unique opportunity to engage with Eisenhower Fellows from around the region while participating in thought-provoking discussions on important regional issues in the charming town of Ouro Preto, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

NNCC & EF Sponsor Global Healthcare Solutions for Vulnerable Populations in New Zealand

The National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC), at the initiative of Executive Director Tine Hansen-Turton, '05, USA, along with EF and other partners, hosted the first Global Healthcare Solutions to Vulnerable Populations Conference, January 16-17, 2008.

Nearly 200 health professionals from more than 10 countries gathered at the Spencer on Byron Hotel at Takapuna Beach, Auckland, New Zealand, to share innovative health care models and services and to discuss best practices. The conference was sponsored by the National Nursing Centers Consortium, Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Fulbright New Zealand, and Eisenhower Fellowships.  

Joining Hansen-Turton to address best practices in serving vulnerable populations in specialty and primary care in Ireland, Pakistan, and the U.S were Fellows Tom Frawley, '89, Northern Ireland, assembly ombudsman; and Abdul Bari Khan, '04, Pakistan, assistant professor of cardiac surgery at Dow University and Civil Hospital, and director/founder of the Indus Hospital in Karachi. 

NNCC, AUT and Eisenhower Fellows will be working on strategies of how to further enhance the partnership among the organization present, as well as other universities and organizations in New Zealand, Ireland and beyond.

Eisenhower Fellows present for the conference also had the opportunity to network with the New Zealand Fellows when they were hosted one evening by New Zealand Fellow Susan Baragwanath, ‘94. Also joining were the first Fellow from New Zealand, John Rose, '65; Paul Tapsell, '05; and David McConnell, '08, the current and most recent Fellow.

Argentina Fellows Gather to Meet New Single Region Program Fellows

The Fellows of Argentina gathered recently to meet the new Fellows who have been selected for the 2008 Latin America Regional Program. Alumni Fellows reminisced about their own fellowship experiences and shared tips with the new Fellows, who will travel to the United States in the fall.

Fellows present included Enrique Pinedo, ’57; Julio Alvarez, ’60; Alberto Mondet, ’65; Ignacio Braun Cantilo, ’79; Maria Gowland, ’88; Julio Hang, ’88, and spouse Adriana; Juan Sola, ’88; Felipe Noguera, ’88; Marta Pascual, ’88; Carlos Regazzoni, ’04; and 2008 Fellows Alejandro Mashad, Diego Valenzuela, and Santiago del Sel.

Brazilian Fellow Marcelo Knobel, ’07, also attended the gathering to speak to the group about the June conference in Ouro Preto.

Walid Maani, ‘83, Jordan, has been appointed to the Upper House of Parliament of Jordan by a Royal Decree. Maani is chairman and professor of neurosurgery at the University of Jordan Medical School and Hospital; and president of the Society of Jordanian Neurosurgeons.

Commander of British Empire, New Years Honors List

Tom Frawley, ’89, Ireland, was named Commander of British Empire for public services in the Queen’s New Year's honors list. Frawley is the Northern Ireland Ombudsman and Commissioner for Complaints.

Chancellor and Chairman of the Board, University of Limerick

Chairman of the National Roads Authority Peter Malone, ’89, Ireland, has been appointed as Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of the University of Limerick for a five-year term of office. Malone is also Chairman of the Gunne Property Group and the Business Tourism Forum.

Chair, Digital Hub Development Agency

Joyce O'Connor, ‘89, Ireland, has been named chair of the Digital Hub Development Agency. She is Emeritus President of the National College of Ireland, and she also chairs the Dublin Inner City Partnership and is a non-executive director of the National Centre for Partnership and Performance and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.

Fellow Receives Queen’s New Year Honors

Beverley Adlam, ’90, New Zealand, was recognized in the Queen’s New Year Honors 2008. She was appointed as a Member of the Order for services to business. Adlam is Director of Maori Affairs and Policy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Fellow Celebrates 35th Anniversary as Artist

Aydin Ayan, ’93, Turkey, recently held his final exhibition commemorating his 35th anniversary in the arts. Held at the Kadikoy Municipality Caddebostan Art Center in Istanbul, the exhibition was titled “Tendencies” and included a retrospective collection of his artwork. Ayan held five painting exhibitions throughout 2007 to celebrate his 35 years in art at various spaces in Turkey. One was held at the Süleymen Demirel Cultural Center of Selçuk University in Konya, which is named for EF’s ’54 Fellow.

Secretary General, France Telecom Spain

Fernando Ballestero, ‘98, Spain, has been named Secretary General of France Telecom Spain in Madrid. He previously spent nearly four years as the Spanish ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris.

Director of Non-Commercial Partners, Microsoft UPG

Heba Ramzy, ’99, Egypt, has relocated to Redmond, WA, to take a new position as director of non-commercial partners for the Microsoft Unlimited Potential Group. In her new position, she will be responsible for developing strategy for partnering with key global NGOs, International Governmental Organizations, and Governments around UPG solutions and strategies. Ramzy was previously the social responsibility programs manager of the Middle East & Africa at Microsoft.

Director of Policy and Planning, Community Advocates, Inc.

David Riemer, ’99, USA, has been named director of policy and planning for Community Advocates, Inc. In this position, he will be responsible for launching the newly established Community Advocates’ Public Policy Institute, which will serve as a forum to develop social change strategies, coordinate research and provide advocacy to help alleviate the problems and inequities that adversely affect the poor in Milwaukee and Wisconsin.

Riemer most recently served as Project Director of the Wisconsin Health Project, in which capacity he led the development of one of the major health care reform proposals in the state.

Proposal Chosen by Delaware Smart Growth Alliance

Tom Lussenhop, ’01, USA, recently had his proposal chosen as part of the Delaware Valley Smart Growth Alliance. The proposal, which was submitted in conjunction with Campus Apartments and Hersha Hospitality, is an extended-stay hotel in West Philadelphia that will combine adaptive re-use of a long-abandoned historic mansion with new construction of an 11-story tower at 40th and Pine Streets. The development team hopes to start construction this year. Lussenhop is an independent real estate developer.

Profile, PBS “E2” Series

Enrique Peñalosa, ’01, Colombia, was recently profiled as part of PBS’s  “E2” series, an ongoing series about solutions to environmental challenges. Peñalosa, the former mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, was featured for his work of transforming one of the world’s most chaotic cities into a model of civic-minded and sustainable urban planning. He will be speaking at EF's conference in Ouro Preto, June 5-8, 2008.

EF Trustee Visits Philippines, Meets With Fellows

EF Trustee Derek Chilvers recently visited the Philippines and met with many alumni Fellows in the country. Among his activities was a dinner in Chilvers’ honor hosted by EF Trustee and nominating committee member Washington SyCip. Fellows present included: Larry Henares, ’58; Ramon Hermano, ’59; Conrado Sanchez, ’62; Lelia Bautista, ’83; Ismael Villareal, ’86; Ernesto Garilao, ’86; Omar Cruz, ’86; Carmen Abella, ’86; Danilo Songco, ’99; Carlito Galvez, ’06; Rafael Bundoc, ’07; and Lea Ng, ’07.

Liming Lee, ‘97, China, was recently named director general of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences/Peking Union Medical College. He was previously vice president of these institutions.

Khalid Alghurair, ’05, Saudi Arabia, was promoted to general manager of financial planning and budgeting, and assigned as head of the Investors Relations Unit at Saudi Telecom. He previously was director of the Tariffs and Interconnection Department.
