Singapore Fellow Thinks A Rising Asia Needs Balance

Simon Tay, ’02, Singapore recently published his new book, Asia Alone: The Dangerous Post-Crisis Divide from America to share his perspectives gained from many years of observation and involvement at the highest levels.

A summary: Asia divided from America: a scenario many hope will not happen. However, such a division is becoming increasingly probable as post-crisis trends seem to point toward a divorce of the two economies as Asia steams ahead in forging its own path, without America. The Asia-America partnership, valuable and indeed critical to both since the end of the Second World War, may cease precipitately if a new engagement and rebalancing act is not reached. In this lucidly written book, Tay highlights the accelerating trends toward America’s decoupling with Asia and presents a penetrating analysis of why Asia and America are still and shall continue to be codependent. He also describes the path forward, including new policy directions as well as shifts in underlying attitudes on each side required to avoid this separation and to achieve a shared future.

Argentina Fellow Publishes New Book

Carlos Javier Regazzoni, ’04, Argentina, gave a presentation on his recent book, The Political Mission of the University (La misión Política de la Universidad), at the Institute for Social and Legal Research at the University of Buenos Aires. Considerations included in the publication are: Is it possible for a healthy democratic system, based on dialogue, to be without a solid university system? The university has the mission to teach politics, to talk and to think on a scientific basis. The impact of education on the political organization is situated in the narrow link that exists between education and the idea of a national state.

Turkish Fellow Introduces Sectoral Approach to Global Compact Implementation

The Global Compact Network Turkey has developed an innovative sectoral approach for promoting the Global Compact, which is being implemented in three key industries in the country: pharmaceutical, automotive and textile. A signing ceremony was held recently for 33 companies in the pharmaceutical industry. Recognizing that companies within a sector often face common issues, Global Compact Network Turkey hopes to better support common approaches to sustainability within an industry. Additionally, it is anticipated that industry associations can facilitate the recruitment of member companies to commit to responsible practices, as covered by the Global Compact. The Global Compact Office encourages other Local Networks to consider similar sectoral outreach and approaches. Download an article by Dr. Yılmaz Argüden, ’93, Turkey, Representative Global Compact Network Turkey, regarding the rationale and process undertaken for the sectoral approach.
