Spain Fellow Hosts EF Executive Committee Chair

Alfonso Vegara, ’87, Spain and his wife, Ana, hosted a dinner at the Fundación Metropoli (of which Alfonso is the president) in honor of John and Christine Todd Whitman, chair of Eisenhower Fellowships’ Executive Committee. Fernando Ballestero, ’98, Spain, and his wife, María José Beltrán, also attended as well as Mark Dwyer, the Director of the Cities Lab at the foundation.

Bicentennial Medal

Argentina Fellow Honored

Mauricio Macri, City Governor of the Ciudad de Buenos Aires, led the public act where six outstanding intellectuals were awarded the Bicentennial Medal. He declared that “in the years to come, Argentina more than ever would need the meditation and reflection of them in order to help us rebuild the institutional scaffolding of the country”.

At the Municipal Palace, Natalio Botana, Beatriz Sarlo, Aldo Ferrer, Juan José Sebreli, Ivonne Bordelois and Enrique Valiente Noailles (second from right in photo), '00, Argentina, received the “The Bicentennial Eve Program” of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. This distinction was awarded by prominent personalities in commemoration of the 200 years of the establishment of the First Independent Government.

Addressing the guests of honor, the City Governor emphasized that Argentina will need their contributions due to the fact that “the following years would be very important in terms of debate on true values and principal elements that constitutes societies”. In addition, the City Minister of Culture, Hernán Lombardi, explained that the city has decided to acknowledge this group of intellectuals that “not only with their outstanding professional background show us the path to follow, but also they are reference of thought”. The aim of the Bicentennial Medal is to acknowledge prominent personalities and institutions for their work, trajectory, honesty, decency, sustained labor and generous contribution to the society of their time.

USA Fellow to Bring Expertise to State Health Care Reform CommitteeBruno Foussard

David R. Riemer, '99, USA, Director of the Community Advocates Public Policy Institute, has been chosen as a member of the Wisconsin Legislative Council Special Committee on Health Care Reform Implementation. The committee will study and make recommendations to the State Legislature on what changes Wisconsin should make in response to recently enacted federal health care reform legislation. It will also study all aspects of the federal legislation that affect Wisconsin including insurance market reforms, coverage for uninsured persons, preventive care and quality improvement.

The 21-member committee, made up of seven legislators and 14 public members, will be co-chaired by Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Waunakee) and Rep. Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee), and
co-vice chaired by Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Rep. Kitty Rhoades (R-Hudson).
“I’m honored to have been chosen to serve on this committee,” said Riemer. “While the
recent national health insurance reform legislation was a tremendous step forward to insuring all
Americans, there are many issues we must resolve so that Wisconsin’s citizens can take full
advantage of the new law’s many benefits. Wisconsin also has a unique opportunity to design a
health insurance exchange that can actually succeed in controlling health care costs.”

Singapore Fellow's Organization Sponsors Quality of Life StudyLien Foundation

The Economist magazine covered the results of a project that the Lien Foundation (chaired by Laurence Lien, ’10, Singapore) sponsored to compare the quality of end-life care in various countries around the world. The Economist Intelligence Unit was contracted to do the analysis. According to their website, the Lien Foundation drives institutional capacity building to address crucial community needs, and empowers individuals to reach their full potential. It seeks to enhance educational opportunities for the disadvantaged, excellence in eldercare and environmental sustainability in water and sanitation. The Quality of Death Index is
part of the Lien Foundation’s Life Before Death initiative and overall mission to advocate improved care for the dying.

ICANA

Argentina Institute Selects New Officers

ICANA, the Argentine American Cultural Institute, has announced its new Board of Directors. Marita Carballo, ’88, has been selected as President of ICANA. During her two-year mandate, she will be accompanied by Marta Pascual, ’88, (Minor Judge of Lomas de Zamora) as Vice President, and Santiago del Sel, ’08, as Secretary (Former President of Zurich Argentina). In the words of Ms. Carballo, the main objectives of the newly appointed board will be “to foster and enhance what was accomplished by the previous administration”. Ms Carballo has expressed her key interest in promoting the cultural exchange among nations, a statutory objective of ICANA. Ms. Carballo is very interested in maintaining a fluent dialogue with her Excellency the U.S. Ambassador to Argentina, Vilma Socorro Martínez.

Martha HamiltonPolitifactMartha Hamilton, ’95, USA, recently became a writer and editor for Politifact.com, a fact-checking website that was the first non-print Pulitzer winner in 2009. PolitiFact is a project of the St. Petersburg Times to help find the truth in American politics. Reporters and editors from the Times fact-check statements by members of Congress, the White House, lobbyists and interest groups and rate them on their “Truth-O-Meter”.

Nigerian Fellow Wins Banking Award

Yewande Sadiku, ’10, Nigeria, accepted the Euromoney 2010 Award for the Best Investment Bank in Nigeria for Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc. The event was held in London, England. According to their website, Euromoney incorporates “25 global awards for banking and capital markets; and awards the best banks and securities houses in almost 100 countries.” The award is meant to recognize “institutions and individuals that demonstrate leadership, innovation, and momentum…”

French Fellow to Liaise With PentagonBruno Foussard

Bruno Foussard, ’09, France, is moving to Washington, D.C. for a two- to three-year tour as French liaison to the US Chief of Staff Air Force's Strategic Studies Group at the Pentagon. He says he hopes “[t]his position should enable [him] to reactivate EF links.” According to the U.S. Air Force’s website, the group “will also act as a focal point for interaction with joint, interagency and research communities around Washington, D.C.”

Japanese and Indonesian Fellows Meet in Tokyo

Rusdian Lubis, ’90, Indonesia, met with Sumio Takeichi, ’95, Japan, and Hiroyuki Suzuki, '91, Japan, in Tokyo this month. They enjoyed lunch at Mitsubishi Shoji Building overlooking the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Rusdian's visited Japan for the Institute of International Finance meeting on accountability in Tokyo. Lubis said, “This has been very special for me especially after almost eight years I met Sumio in Washington, D.C. when I was with the World Bank and Sumio with IFC ([which he] still is).” The three discussed opportunities to engage Asian Eisenhower Fellows in a regional dialogue.

Thai Fellow Selected for Investigative Group

Dr. Kittipong Kittayarak, ’01, Thailand, was appointed to be a member of the Independent Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a high-level independent panel to investigate the recent political riots in Thailand. According to Thailand’s Alumni Advisory Council representative for Eisenhower Fellowships, Somkiat Tangkitvanich, ’08, “The work of the panel will be key to Thailand's recovery to normalcy.” Read the article in the Bangkok Post for more details.

Competition for Research AwardSimon Tay Book

Professor of Applied Economics M. Paloma Sanchez, ’98, Spain, announced The Autonomous University of Madrid Accenture Chair inEconomics and Management of Innovation 2010 Award for research papers. This year’s theme is “Knowledge and Intellectual Capital’s management in organizations: Towards encouraging innovation”. The bid terms can be found here. Andrea Cabral, ’07, USA, recently participated in the 2010 National NOW Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. As the first Black American female sheriff in Massachusetts history, she spoke at the plenary session titled "Lifting Every Voice: Women of Color and Empowerment", along with Irasema Garza, president of Legal Momentum, Dr. Paula A. Johnson, executive director of the Connors Center for Women's Health and Gender Biology and Kilolo Kijakazi, program officer in the Financial Assets Unit of the Economic Opportunity and Assets Program at The Ford Foundation.

Egypt Fellow's University Featured on Cover of Business Week

The American University in Cairo (AUC) was recently featured on a special promotional cover of Bloomberg’s Business Week as part of the collaboration between Bloomberg and AUC’s School of Business. The AUC School of Business is one of 170 partner schools and the first partner school outside of the United States to have this connection. This includes 50,000 business students that have access to Business Week resources including case studies and faculty materials. The dean of the School of Business, Sherif Kamel, ’05, Egypt, also announced the AUC-Kellogg Executive Development Program. He spoke of the university's determination "through the learning eco-system availed to be among the leading business schools that make a difference on the global stage."
