Brazilian Fellow Connects with Kenyan Cohort

Marcelo Knobel, '07, Brazil, recently visited Nairobi to attend the 2011 International Association of Universities Annual Conference (www.iau-aiu.net). While there, he had the opportunity to meet with Kenyan Fellows David Ndii, '07, (from his Multi Nation Program cohort) and Charles Kahura, '05. They chatted about their lives and how to engage more Fellows in alumni activities. They also shared issues of Brazil and Kenya and discussed the economical situation of both countries.

China Entrepreneurs Come to Philadelphia

On November 10, Eisenhower Fellowships' trustees hosted the China Entrepreneurs Club (CEC) for a luncheon in Philadelphia. Eisenhower Fellowships has been fostering a partnership with the CEC since 2009. The CEC delegation was led by Lenovo Founder and Honorary Chairman Liu Chuanzhi. He was accompanied by 22 of China's most prominent leaders of the private sector. General Brent Scowcroft shared insights to the group on the US-China relationship. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, the Northeast Asia Fellows, a number of trustees and other special guests participated in this unique event. The CEC group met three days later with EF Chairman General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret), in Washington, D.C.

Thai Fellow to Become Sole Spokesperson for NBTC

Supinya Klangnarong, '07, Thailand, became the sole spokesman for the National Broadcast Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) after Suthiphol Taweechaikarn resigned from the head position. He stepped aside so Klangnarong could serve as the sole spokesperson. Currently, she is working on amending regulations on foreign investors so Thailand's telecommunications spectra, a national recourse, will have more protection. As an Eisenhower Fellow, Klangnarong focused her learning on communications as she traveled to multiple U.S. cities. Boeing to Name USA Fellow to Vice President, Investor Relations

Stephanie Pope, '08, USA, has been selected as Boeing's vice president of investor relations. Pope's new position is a promotion from her current role as chief financial officer for the Integrated Logistics section of Boeing Defense, Space, and Security. Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith stated, "Her proven ability to understand and communicate Boeing business operations and strategy will help our financial stakeholders gain the insight they need." On her Eisenhower Fellowship, Pope traveled to Belgium and Ireland to learn more about finance and business. Her expertise in finance as well as the leadership skilled she gleaned during her fellowship made her an ideal candidate for her new position in the Boeing Company. USA Fellows Honored at Awards Gala

Tine Hansen-Turton Cynthia FigueroaWomen's eNews honored Philadelphia Fellows Tine Hansen-Turton (left), '05, and Cynthia Figueroa (right), '10, at the Philadelphia Leaders 2011 Awards Ceremony at Bryn Mawr College. Hansen-Turton is honored for her revolutionizing health care delivery in the U.S. by expanding the role and respect for nurses and nurse practitioners. Figueroa is recognized for her commitment to civic life and women's issues, with a focus on the Latina population. Other awardees included Donna Cooper, a senior fellow with the Center for American Progress and Maria Bello, actress. Founded in 2000, Women's eNews is a prize-winning nonprofit daily Internet-based news service supported by its readers, events and foundations. It covers issues of particular concern to women and provides women's perspectives on policy. Rita Henley Jensen is founder and editor in chief.

Rapid Change and Rapid Challenges Conference in North Carolina

October 27 through 29, the North Carolina Fellows hosted a conference with Eisenhower Fellowships in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. The conference focused on rapid changes and challenges in healthcare, education and technology. Key leaders from the region, such as Secretary of Commerce Keith Crisco and U.S. Congressman David Price (D – NC), spoke. More than 120 guests, including 30 North Carolina and 12 NARP Fellows, supporters, special guests and EF staff participated in the event in the Raleigh, NC area. The conference also included a private tour of the North Carolina Art Museum and a leadership workshop. A group of the participants continued on to Pinehurst, NC to celebrate Eisenhower Day of Fellowship with a keynote address from Captain William Shepherd, former American astronaut who served as commander of Expedition 1, the first crew on the International Space Station. The events were followed by night golf putting and the first EF President's golf tournament. USA Fellows held a special meeting which resulted in a commitment to increasing the number of USA fellowship activities.

Argentina EF Day

The Argentine Eisenhower Fellows celebrated EF Day on November 11 at the Borges Cultural Center in Buenos Aires. The conference focused on three main themes: post-electoral analysis of the recent presidential election and its affect on the new electoral frame, the Argentine economic situation, and the Argentine social situation. Separate panels of Fellows addressed each theme, sharing their keen expertise in the various sectors. Enrique Pinedo, '54, the first Fellow from Argentina, was honored posthumously at the celebration. John Wolf, who was not able to attend the Argentine EF Day in person, greeted the gathering by video. He illustrated the importance of the Fellows' gathering and the way in which they are helping shape the world around them. The EF Day celebrated the world that Dwight D. Eisenhower envisioned, "a world vision more just, more prosperous and at peace."

Jordanian Fellow Appointed Director, King's Office

Imad Fakhoury Imad Fakhoury, '02, Jordan, has been appointed to the position of Director of the King's Office. Fakhoury previously held the positions, Minister of Public Sector Development, and Minister of State for Mega Projects in the Government of Jordan. Also, Mr. Fakhoury served as the Chairman and CEO of the Aqaba Development Corporation and Chief of Staff for Planning and Programming to HM King Abdullah II. As an Eisenhower Fellow, Fakhoury focused his learning on public administration, politics, and government throughout his travels. Read more here.

Australian Fellow's Talk with Queensland Speaks

Leo Hielscher Queensland Speaks, an Australian organization that interviews key individuals from the past 40 years that shape today, recently captured Sir Leo Hielscher, '73, Australia on audio. In the interview, Hielscher speaks about his time as a public servant and the experiences that shaped his policies. He cites his Eisenhower Fellowship in 1973 as a personal achievement that shaped his beliefs. Sir Leo's witness to the American economy and the problems it faced helped him put together an effective team that solved complex economic issues affecting Queensland. USA Fellow wins Rockfall's Certificate of Honor

Karl Wagener At their 2011 Annual Meeting, held on October 17th, the Rockfall Foundation recognized Karl J. Wagener, '95, USA, for his lifetime concern for the environment and presented him with the Rockfall's Certificate of Honor. During his fellowship, Wagener traveled to the Czech Republic and Slovakia and learned about ways in which environmental issues are handled in Central Europe. He focused his attention on how environmental improvements are attained and how disputes are resolved in areas that have a short history of democracy. Wagener served 25 years as executive director of Connecticut's Council on Environmental Quality. Read more here.

Korean Fellow Wins Mayoral Election

Won Soon Park 1999 Fellow from Korea Won Soon Park has been elected the mayor of Seoul, South Korea, under the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy. Referred to as a "civic activist backed by liberal opposition" in Korean media, Park won by a margin of seven percent. His first official act in office was to sign a bill from Seoul's city council that provides 18.5 billion won ($16.6 million USD) of funding, to an elementary school free-lunch program. Prior to being elected, Park has been executive director of the Beautiful Foundation and secretary general for the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy. Turkish Fellow Publishes Book on Good Governance

Yilmaz 1993 Eisenhower Fellow Dr. Yilmaz Argüden, Turkey, recently published Keys to Governance: Strategic Leadership for Quality of Life. Arguden's book shows that keys to good governance are common to all organizations and that learning how ideals of good governance should be applied is critical for creating a stable society. This publication has been met with great acclaim from people in academia, the business world, and those working in government. Dean Emeritus of Harvard Business School, John H. McArthur stated, "In these particularly difficult transition years we have here an oasis of calmly, thoughtfully, and carefully explained wisdom and suggestions about the think and act. A must read."

Japanese Fellow's Appearance in Oklahoma

Last month, Yoshifumi Fukunaga, '11, Japan, spoke to high school students in Edmond, Oklahoma. His appearance, chronicled in the Edmond Sun, focused on subjects ranging from Pokemon to the Japanese response to the earthquake and tsunami. The goal of the address was to inform students about life in another country and broaden their horizons. Both of which are steps toward the Eisenhower Fellowship's goal of continuing the relationship between the U.S. and Northeast Asia.

Milken Institute's Summit on the New Global Economy

On October 17th and 18th, leaders in industry and finance met in Heron Tower, London to discuss the forces driving the new global economy and the best way to shape the future by pushing policy and capitol toward innovative solutions. Bradley Belt, '97, USA, and a Senior Managing Director of the Milken Institute, played a key role in organizing the summit. During the conference, Belt moderated the panel discussion "Can the U.S. Avoid a Double-Dip?", a conversation that focused on the crucial factors at work in the U.S. economy and what long-term economic relationship the U.S. should employ with China. The summit succeeded in bringing together world leaders and pushed them to think about innovative solutions to today's problems in order to create a better future.

EF Day Celebrations Continue

This time of year has brought a surge of Eisenhower Day of Fellowship celebrations around the world. Fellows in Israel gathered for dinner with EF President John Wolf at the home of Ami Orkaby, '03, Israel, in September. On President Eisenhower's birthday, October 14, several commemorations took place in several time zones. Brazilian Fellows organized a day-long seminar on the theme of "Informal Opportunities for Continuing Education and In-Service Teacher Training" in collaboration with the Federal University of Spiritu Santo and Municipal Secretariats of Education from Vitoria and Espirito Santo. In Hungary, many Fellows and guests gathered at Obuda University for a symposium on a sustainable future for Hungary. The seminar was open to virtual participation. For the first time, Jamaica celebrated EF Day. The theme, "Urban Renewal of Kingston – New Thinking and New Approaches", was played out with organized meetings and discussions on urban and regional development in collaboration with the Jamaica American Friendship Society, U.S. Embassy, Kingston Restoration Company Limited, and the Urban Development Corporation. Pedro Ortiz, '98, Spain, consultant to the World Bank on urban issues, was the primary presenter. Fellows in China (Taiwan) enjoyed lunch together and sang a wonderful birthday song for Ike with a two layer cake. To watch this song, click here and go to minute 2:15.

Belgium-European Commission, Australia, Finland

On October 15, Fellows from Belgium and the European Commission enjoyed the play "A Louer" at the KVS: Arduinkaai in Brussels. Afterwards, they had a reception where Robert Faucher, Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy, joined them. Annabel Crabb, '11, Australia, was the guest speaker for her country's Eisenhower Day of Fellowship on October 18 to an audience of 200. The event was co-hosted by the Australian Eisenhower Fellows and the Sydney Institute, including Sydney-based alumni and a representative from the U.S. Consulate. Crabb's speech can be found here. On October 20, Finnish alumni gathered at the home of Liisa Suvikumpu, '11, Finland, to hear highlights from her fellowship and discuss how Finnish Fellows as a collective can make a difference in society.

Chile, Peru

Chilean Fellows honored EF Day with an event at the home of the Deputy of the U.S. Embassy, Mr. James Buddy Williams, in Santiago. The alumni also welcomed Carlos Abogabir, 2012 Fellow who will take part in the spring Multi Nation Program. And just to the north of them, EF Day in Peru was celebrated at the Centro Cultural PUCP (Catholic University), as a cultural and scientific event to promote social equity, with the collaboration from the Peruvian alumni Fellows, the Psychology Department of the PUCP, the Alumni PUCP, Fulbright Commission, and the U.S. Embassy.

Research Triangle, North Carolina, USA

As part of a two-day conference "Rapid Change, Rapid Challenge", the Fellows of North Carolina hosted an EF Day dinner on October 28 at Pinehurst Resort. The dinner brought together 70 Fellows and friends from 10 countries, with a keynote presentation from Captain William Shepherd (USN, Ret), who was on the first mission to the International Space Station. Also honored at the dinner was Guzman Aguilar, '61, Bolivia, who was celebrating his 50th anniversary as an Eisenhower Fellow.

Also, from Malaysia, Anwar Fazal, '72, wanted to share these words from President Eisenhower.
