Thai Fellows Win Awards

Sanitsuda Ekachai, '95, Thailand, (left) has won the Thailand Tatler Award. She is recognized in the group of "Women Who Make a Difference", for her efforts to raise awareness of the forgotten women of Thailand, especially in rural areas. Read more in the Bangkok Post.

Thai Fellow Somkiat Tangkitvanich, '08, (right) has been selected by the Thai Broadcast Journalist Association as one among ten people who made significant impacts on the radio and television market in Thailand throughout the past decade. He was recognized for his contribution in setting up the Thai PBS, the first public broadcaster in Thailand and Southeast Asia and for being the main architect who drafted two important broadcasting and telecom laws that helped reform the media in Thailand.

USA Ag Fellows Meet in Chicago and D.C.

USA Agriculture Fellows Ben Bartlett, '99, Robert Blair, '11, Ben Reinsche, '94, and Bart Ruth, '05, gathered in Chicago the first week of December for DTN/The Progressive Farmer's 2011 Ag Summit "Rebalancing Risk and Reward". The conference featured a panel that included Reinsche and Ruth on the topic of "What Global Risks Mean Down on the Farm". They spoke extensively about their Eisenhower Fellowships and how those global experiences helped form their attitudes and reactions to global risk in the industry today. The Fellows met for dinner to discuss ways in which the Ag alumni of Eisenhower Fellowships can strengthen their network.

Ruth and Adrienne Kravitz, '10, USA, connected in Washington D.C. at the "Solutions from the Land Meeting" last week. They are working together on a larger initiative examining how land, water and other natural resources can be managed in an integrated manner at the scale necessary to meet the challenges of food and energy security, economic development, biodiversity conservation and climate change, in the United States and around the world.

2011 USA Fellows Complete Travels

In the second half of 2011, USA Fellows continued their fellowship travel to Africa, Asia, and South America, with Indonesia and Kenya hosting their first USA Fellows. Kelly Gast travelled to Indonesia where she met with leaders in agriculture to explore the impact of biotechnology on the industry, and Rick Majzun was hosted by Fellows in Kenya to explore initiatives to enhance prenatal care and decrease infant mortality. Robert Blair travelled to Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil where he met with farmers and leaders in agriculture to better understand the potential for enhanced use of technology in precision agriculture. Brigitte Daniel's fellowship took her to India and Sri Lanka to investigate how these two nations are working to bridge the digital divide. Seth Williams travelled on the second half of his fellowship to South Africa, where he explored how this nation has approached crime and criminal justice since the end of Apartheid. Christopher Fang, completed his fellowship in China, where he met with leaders in government, business, and academia to learn from lessons of leadership in China. Russian Fellow Visits St. Louis

Last week, Evgeniya Shamis, '10, Russia, organized a visit of executive board members of RUSNANO to St. Louis, Missouri. RUSNANO is the largest Russian nanotechnology investment company, managing a USD$10 billion fund and more than 130 projects, including 11 in North America. During the visit, the group met with bioscience companies and organizations in St. Louis. They analyzed the development of the St. Louis bioscience cluster while considering ideas for similar clusters in Russia. The goal of the week-long visit was to set a basis for collaborative projects between Russia and U.S. in the biotech sphere, find U.S. biotech companies for investments and start cooperation in cluster development between the two countries, in particular creation of bioscience cluster in Russia. Shamis develops business clusters in Russia and promotes businesses and local communities collaborate for global competition. Of the visit, Shamis said, "The visit went well and this is due, to a great extent, to my EF experience. I am very grateful for American partners with whom I met last year during the fellowship (in particular, to former head of Danforth Foundation Peter Sortino and head of BioSt.Louis Donn Rubin) for their cooperation in organizing the visit. I could see in practice how EF connections helped to develop Russian-American relations and better cooperation." During her visit, Shamis also met with EF trustee John McDonnell and USA alumni Fellows Robert Freund, '08, and Marti Cortez, '10.

Palestinian Fellow's Media Outlets Awarded

Wattan TV & Wattan Online News have been awarded the Palestine Transparency Media Award for 2011 by AMAN, the Coalition for Transparency and Integrity. Wattan's General Director Muamar Orabi, '09, Palestine, assured the pursuit of justice transparency and integrity. He also stated, "We are thankful for the appreciation of our work and we promise to continue to unveil the truth in spite of all the obstacles!" Orabi dedicated the prize to independent media in the Arab World and thanked the contribution of international donors and supporters who assist the station in producing unique productions that aim to disseminate democracy and human rights culture in Palestine.

Eighteen Eisenhower Fellows of the Indonesia Alumni Chapter and guests had their quarterly gathering this week to watch Arisan 2, sequel of Arisan, both written, directed, and produced by Nia Dinata, '07, Indonesia. The group enjoyed the movie at Plaza Senayan Cinema XXI, after which, they dined at Oyster Restaurant.

Jamaican Fellow to Collaborate with Chinese University in Namibia

Zhejiang Normal University (ZNU) President Wu Fengmin met with Deputy Vice Chancellor of The International University of Management (IUM), Namibia Professor Earle Spencer Taylor, '82, Jamaica, as part of the first meeting of the China-Africa Think Tank's Forum and the Seminar on Think Tanks for African Countries organized by ZNU and sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of China. On behalf of their respective universities, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish (a) collaboration in areas of business studies, education, science and research, exchange of students and staff and also in exchange of information materials.

Paula Bennett, '10, New Zealand, has been re-appointed as a Minister of the Crown. Bennett is now on the parliamentary front bench (a spokesperson for her party). Bennett will keep her portfolio for Social Development and Youth Affairs, with responsibility for the implementation of welfare reform.

2012 Multi Nation Program Fellows Announced

On March 31, 2012, Eisenhower Fellowships will welcome 22 remarkable professionals from 20 countries to the United States for the 2012 Multi Nation Program. They will come together representing organizations such as the World Bank in Argentina, National Council for Childhood and Motherhood in Egypt and the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Singapore. The group has already shown great enthusiasm to coalesce with the EF Network and has begun building connections within their group through social media tools. The list of Fellows can be found here. Additional information regarding the Fellows and their travels will be posted in the coming weeks.

USA Fellow Continues Travels in China

Dr. Christopher Fang, '11, USA, arrived in Beijing last week on the second leg of his fellowship travels, with Dr. Jiang Bo, '99, China, officially welcoming him with lunch at a restaurant next to the China Central Party School (CCPS). Fang toured the school and learned that two other Fellows are currently at the Party School: Li Liming, '97, and Qiu Lixin, '12. Dr. Fang also met China Entrepreneurs Club (CEC) Secretary General Cheng Hong last week and was invited to attend the China Entrepreneur Summit.

Irish Eisenhower Fellows

Newcastle, County Down was the site of the 2011 Irish EF Day event held November 19-20. The weekend seminar, "Health: Maintaining Services in Challenging Times", organized by Lourda Geoghegan, '10, hosted leading experts from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in various ministries and government agencies. Two dozen program participants were treated to engaging presentations and discussions on issues of health system redesign and service delivery, the financial context for health and social care delivery and current challenges to health and social well-being.

The second morning, devoted to EF Ireland business, included rotation of members on the governing body, the Network Organizing Committee. The current makeup of the committee includes: Chair Tom Frawley,'89, Treasurer Joe Stone (Spouse of Mary Walsh,'89), Secretary David Lavery,'89, Joyce O'Connor, '89, Lourda Geoghegan, '10, Seamus O'Prey, '09, Michael Smith, '04, and Donal de Buitleir, '87. Fellow recruitment, mentoring and EF's 60th anniversary were discussed with Diane Shoemaker, director, EF alumni network, who attended from Philadelphia.

Japanese Alum Celebrate Fellowship

Upon the return of the four most recent Fellows, the Japanese alumni gathered to celebrate EF Day, hear feedback on the 2011 Northeast Asia Regional Program and share information regarding the EF Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) conference in Indonesia in October.

2011 Japanese Fellows Yoshi Fukunaga, Naomi Ishii, Shunsuke Niwa and Takayuki Terasaki spoke on their experience of the EF program, and Sumio Takeichi, '95, and Go Ito, '05, reported on the Indonesia conference and discussed future alumni network initiatives in the Asian region. Attendees also exchanged views of EF activities, global political/economic situations and future opportunities in Asia.

2011 Fellows Reunite

Only a few weeks after departing the U.S., the six Chinese Fellows from the 2011 Northeast Asia Regional Program came together for their first reunion. Celebrating (and singing until midnight), they dined at a Brazilian barbecue restaurant and visited the home of Dr. Hu Yuankun, where he showed them his military collection, including top badges from the former Soviet Union, Germany, and Mongolia as well as original signatures from famous generals.
