Jason Gonzales is mayor of Lambunao, an agrarian, 80,000-person municipality in the Philippines, where rice, bananas, corn and coffee are cultivated, and 27% percent of the population lives in poverty. Effective policies and good governance are important for a city, but so is good design, such as the conversion of Times Square in New York into a pedestrian corridor that radically stimulated business and employment. His goal on fellowship was to interview prominent planners and visit successful cities to study how "thoughtful urban design" impacts public health, its citizens’ sense of equality, and encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.
