De Correspondent is an advertising-free, 58,000-member-funded, journalism platform co-founded in 2013 by Rob Wijnberg, a former editor in chief of a Dutch daily newspaper. Providing a forum for new voices, De Correspondent members who have a particular expertise are encouraged to engage in dialogue with writers, and from their collaboration stories emerge. The idea is that cash alone won’t be enough keep public-service journalism alive in today’s landscape; there has to be a social contract between journalists and members. As an Eisenhower Fellow, Wijnberg took his model for collaborative journalism to the U.S., with the goal of creating an English language edition.
