As Fire Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia, Adam Thiel runs one of the largest “all-hazards” fire and emergency services in the U.S., protecting more than 1.6 million residents in the nation’s fifth-largest city. He leads the 2,800-member department and provides emergency response policy advice to the mayor and City Council. Thiel plans to visit South Africa, where the fire-death rate is 50 percent higher than in the U.S., and Germany, where it is 50 percent lower. He will study factors affecting safety in both countries and plans to develop cross-cultural training programs designed to reduce fire deaths in urban areas.
