As Fire Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia, Adam Thiel runs one of the largest “all-hazards” fire and emergency services agencies in the U.S., protecting more than 1.6 million residents in the nation’s fifth-largest city. He leads the 2,800-member department and provides policy advice to the mayor and City Council. Thiel plans to visit South Africa, where the fire-death rate is significantly higher than in the U.S., and Germany, where it is significantly lower. He will study factors affecting safety in both countries and plans to develop cross-cultural training programs designed to help reduce fire deaths in urban areas.
