Kel O’Neill is an artist and filmmaker specializing in interactive and virtual reality projects. At the Economist Media Lab, O’Neill is one-part artist-in-residence and one-part explorer. Independently, he and his partner Eline Jongsma created PBS’s Emmy-nominated, Webby-honored interactive documentary Empire and won the Tim Hetherington Visionary Award for their virtual reality documentary The Ark. His work has been exhibited at venues such as SXSW, IDFA DocLab, REDCAT, Les Recontres d’Arles, and the Tribeca and New York Film Festivals. He is an immersive media consultant and mentor at Film Independent, and founded the LA chapter of the immersive storytelling community StoryCode. In Chinese Taipei, he explored how artists and technology companies can collaborate to create experiences that nurture positive social change. O’Neill focused on strategies to nurture connections between sectors and apply this knowledge to building his own non-profit media lab in the U.S.
