As executive director of the Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness at the University of Texas in El Paso, Patrick Schaefer leads a team of professional researchers, graduate students and undergraduates who address binational issues of concern to the U.S. and Mexico, and regional issues of concern to the region of Paso del Norte, which includes Texas, New Mexico and the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The convergence of this region forms a critical geostrategic trade route to markets in Canada, the Great Lakes, and the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific coasts. On fellowship, Schaefer wants to develop a deeper understanding of China's economy, and improve his Chinese language skills. He intends to publish a case study on the importance of Chinese trade to the Paso del Norte region. Armed with that knowledge, he would like to contribute to the discussions at the U.S.-China Business Council, the China Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
