Robin Emmons created a non-profit organization committed to eliminating inequities in the food system that prevent marginalized populations from accessing healthy, fresh food. Sow Much Good engages more than 1,000 volunteers each season to maintain ten acres of farmland, cultivating nine tons of fresh, chemical-free food each season. The organization distributes food from the farms to low-income families through an affordable delivery service and a network of neighborhood farm stands. Under Emmons’ leadership, the organization has served more than 20,000 individuals and families throughout the state of North Carolina. While on fellowship, Emmons explored China’s agricultural and land protection policies in order to inform her development of sustainable agrarian initiatives for non-traditional and marginalized farmers. Her goal is to create policy proposals, case studies and funding models that will serve as a foundation for generating greater food equity and increasing opportunities for the working poor to alleviate environmental stressors and poverty in their communities.
