At Leading Educators, an education reform and professional development group based in New Orleans, Sonya Anderson is “lead storyteller,” raising the profile of her organization’s partnerships with school districts to train and empower mid-career teachers with leadership skills that extend their influence beyond the classroom. The organization’s distributed leadership model aims to improve learning by adding a layer of decision-making support for school principals and administrators. Leading Educators prioritizes working in under-resourced schools that primarily serve low-income students of color. Similarly, during her fellowship, Anderson will explore how Finland and Peru have addressed demographic, social, and cultural shifts in their school-aged population, and the strategies that ministries of education, teacher training institutions, and other stakeholders have implemented to ensure equal and equitable access to high quality educational opportunities for all students.
