Overseeing one of the world’s premier biomedical research centers, William Shaw is working to create an environment where innovation thrives by bringing together world-leading scientists, business leaders and patients to solve important healthcare issues. Shaw is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Center and administration of its $40+ million in research revenue. In addition, he spearheads business development activities through establishing relationships with academic institutions, industry participants, philanthropic donors and government agencies. By bringing together this group of stakeholders, Shaw and the Center are taking on the most pressing problems facing healthcare today, such as solving Alzheimer’s and curing cancer. While on fellowship, Shaw will analyze differences in culture, finance, law and regulation that underlie biomedical innovation in the U.S. and China. He will concentrate on how to increase collaboration between U.S. academic innovators and Chinese industry to drive investment in high-risk, early-stage ideas that lead to new healthcare products and services.
